As to the actual metro area, London is my favorite city in the world. There is so much history and so many things to do. While Paris is great and some other cities are fantastic, London simply has so much that interest me. And as a bonus, they speak English!
Just a few of the better places to go include:
- Tower of London – a huge complex begun by William the Conqueror around 1070
- The Crown Jewels of the UK – a separate exhibit within the Tower of London
- Buckingham Palace – the Royal Residence with the Changing of the Guard
- Herod’s Department Store
- Kensington Palace – Museum of the Stewart Royal family and still used as a residence for Prince William’s family
- Trafalgar Square and the Theater District
- The British Museum
- The National Gallery (British Museum of Art) at Trafalgar Square
- Victoria and Albert Museum
- Parliament and Big Ben
- Westminster Abbey
- Walk along either side of the Thames
- St. James Gardens – in front of Buckingham Palace
- Ride the Ferry to almost any destination on the Thames, just to see the city
- Wandsworth Park, a great destination for the ferry – one of my favorites
- Covent Gardens – actually a district of the city near Trafalgar Square
- Hyde Park – between Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace
- Globe Theater replica – on the Thames – original was inland a few blocks away
- London Bridge
- St. Paul’s Cathedral
- Tower Bridge
- The London “Tube” (subway and train system)
- Tate Modern Museum – for those with wacky art tastes, this is heaven!
- White Hart Pub – oldest licensed establishment in London dating to the 1200’s and a great place to eat
- The London Eye – a 443 foot tall Ferris Wheel structure with a 394 foot wheel.

And these are just the “must see” places on my list. There are hundreds more worth seeing!
